Bratislava Castle

Set on a hill overlooking the city, Bratislava Castle is impressive from the outside. The exhibits inside are forgettable, but it's worth walking around the grounds and soaking in the best view in town.

Castelo dos Mouros

Built in the 8th and 9th centuries during a period of Islamic rule in Spain, the impressive Moorish Castle occupies a sheer hilltop above Sintra. The history and walk along the walls (careful on the steps, and the uphill portion is a moderate hike) are well worth the visit.

Castelo de Sao Jorge

Perched on a hilltop overlooking Lisbon, the Castelo de Sao Jorge traces hundreds of years of Lisbon's history. Perhaps the main attraction is the incredible view offered from the courtyard, though walking through the castle and visiting the museum are enjoyable as well.

Burg Eltz

Set in the Moselle valley, Burg Eltz is one of Germany's loveliest medieval castles. This castle has a 900 year history (and managed to avoid destruction through that time) and is still owned by the original family. After admiring the turrets and towers, you'll enjoy a 40 minute tour of the inside.

Château de Chenonceau

One of the prettiest castles in Europe, Chenonceau sits in the Loire Valley along the river Cher. You'll instantly recognize it for its beautiful arched bridge. The wonderful setting, formal gardens, and lovely architecture makes this chateau a highly enjoyable visit.

Hohensalzburg Fortress

This fortress sits on a cliff 400 feet above the city of Salzburg. Walk up mostly for the spectacular views over Salzburg and wander the mildly interesting exhibits on war.

Neuschwanstein Castle

This is the fairytale castle you have seen on a million postcards and the inspiration for Disney's Sleeping Beauty’s Castle. It's in a wonderful location in a valley among the Bavarian Alps, and is stunning even if it was a 19th century folly.

Chateau Castelnaud

This castle hangs onto a cliff above the Dordogne River and has a great castle museum covering warfare (weapons and armor). The castle is a little more touristy than Beynac's but is still a great ste…

Chateau de Beynac

This castle perches 500 feet above the Dordogne River and offers many sparse, intact rooms with fantastic views of the countryside.

Canoe the Dordogne

This is pretty much the quintessential activity near Sarlat France and the one you'll see your friends post and instantly be jealous of their pictures. Feel like you're in Michael Crichton's Timeline on this 9 mile paddle of the Lot River Valley as you float by impressive castles that once withstood the 100 Years' War.
