Green Vault and Royal Palace

Dresden’s Royal Palace was the residence of the Saxon kings and was totally destroyed during WWII. The painstaking work to reconstruct the Renaissance building is still occurring, but it currently houses the Historic Green Vault and the New Green Vault, both holding jewels and treasures. It also has the Royal Armory with a great collection of armor.

You definitely want to visit the Historic Green Vault. This is the beautiful, glittering Baroque treasury collection. The Jewel Garnitures (Juwelen-Garnituren) constitute the largest collection of jewels in Europe (some of these treasures were stollen in a robbery in 2019). To visit, you must purchase a separate ticket, either a standard timed entry or a VIP ticket (pricey but lets you skip the line). Only a certain number of visitors can visit each day so you must book in advance (online). You also must print out your ticket, an electric version isn’t accepted.
