Transportation

You shouldn’t plan on renting a car in Vietnam; the streets are packed with cars and scooters that don’t abide by the rules of the road. Fortunately, taxis are reasonably priced, and the downtown areas of many of the cities are walkable.

Not-to-Miss Local Food and Drink

Vietnam is justly known for its curries and noodle dishes. If you like beer, you may want to try the famous cheap beer in Hanoi’s Old Quarter; it’s pretty good!

Not-to-Miss Activities

  • Hiking and cycling—Vietnam has beautiful mountains, valleys, and rice paddies. We highly recommend taking a trip into the mountains to walk or cycle; we loved visiting the town of Mai Chau.
  • Beaches—Vietnam has some beautiful beaches, especially in the center and south of the country. If you want some to relax near the ocean, consider visiting Nha Trang or Phú Quốc in the south, or Hội An or Da Nang in central Vietnam.
  • Mekong River—The world’s twelfth largest river is beautiful and winds through Vietnam’s remarkable jungles. Take a cruise on the river to see the scenery and immerse yourself in local life and culture.
