Larco Museum

Housed in a Lima mansion, this museum focuses on pre-Inca artifacts from all over Peru. It does an excellent job of surveying and explaining pre-Inca cultures.

Hillwood Estate

Marjorie Post, heir to the General Foods fortune, bought this stunning mansion in 1955 and soon decided it should be a museum open to the public. She filled the house with beautiful furniture and art from 18th and 19th century France and Russia. She landscaped the estate's 25 acres with beautiful gardens and woodland paths.

National Postal Museum

The National Postal Museum traces the history of the people, technology, and ideas that make the mail work. It also has a large collection of stamps and exhibits about the people and events that have been featured on them.

Igreja do Carmo (Carmo Convent)

Founded as a convent in 1389, the Igreja do Carmo was destroyed in the 1755 Lisbon earthquake. The walls of the church still stand, as do some of the arches that once supported the roof. It's worth the visit just to wander the eerie site, open to the sky. There's also a small archaeological museum in the nave and apse containing pieces from throughout Portuguese history.

Portland Museum of Art

An impressive collection of works by famous artists from around the world, as well as some by local artists. The building was designed by I.M. Pei, and it includes an outdoor sculpture park.

Wadsworth-Longfellow House

Built around 1786, the Wadsworth-Longfellow House was the home of one of New England's most prominent families. The poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow grew up here. Today, it houses a museum containing numerous original items and artifacts, as well as the Maine Historical society.
