The Potholes

Start at Silver Lake (about 40 miles south of Tahoe - near Kirkwood). Park at the Silver Lake dam, cross highway 88 and walk north along either side of the creek an easy 1/2 mile or so to a series of roman bath-like pools carved out of the granite and filled with water from the stream that flows down from Silver Lake.

Stone Windmill and Fort St. Elme Hike

One of the best activities in Collioure is a hike up to both the stone windmill and Fort St. Elme which offers you unparalleled views of the seaside town and bay. Try to avoid doing this hike in the peak of the day when the sun can be brutal.

Montserrat

The most sacred spot in Catalunya, Montserrat towers in the mountains 1.5 hours away from Barcelona. It offers both a mountain top Benedictine monastery (Montserrat) nestled in the jagged mountainside and hikes through a unique  and impressive terrain of rocky peaks.

Jungle Hike Popa Dos Indigenous Village

Most lodges offer tours to an indigenous village, or you can pick a company in Bocas Town to go through. We opted for the tour through Popa Paradise Beach Resort which began with a boat ride through a narrow channel in the mangroves. We then followed an indigenous and local guide through the rainforest where he pointed out interesting plants and bird species. You'll walk along planks over swamp water (hold onto the poles sticking out of the water!) and end on a dirt path. You'll then emerge to the beautiful village of Popa Dos.

Sarajevo Olympic Bobsleigh and Luge Track

Situated in the hills of Mountain Trebević, this bobsled course was used in the 1984 Olympics and then 9 years later it was the front lines of the Bosnian war. The Bosnian Serb Army used it as a base for artillery and cover. Today you can walk down the abandoned bobsled track covered with graffiti and sniper nests.
