Palermo's massive cathedral is worth stopping by if you're in the area, but it pales in comparison to the intimate beauty of Capella Palantina or the grandeur of Monreale Cathedral.

A fantastic day trip from Hanoi that mixes natural beauty with history and culture. You'll see Hoa Lu ( Cố đô Hoa Lư), Vietnam's beautiful historic capital, cruise the rivers near Tam Coc, and see Bich Dong Pagoda.

Saigon Free Walking Tour

A network of volunteer local students, Saigon Free Walking Tours will take you on a tour of the city customized to your interests. Highlights will include Notre Dame Cathedral of Saigon, the post office, opera house, and fine arts museum.

Mekong Cruise to Ben Tre

When you're in Saigon, you should absolutely spend a day floating the Mekong River. We chose Mango Cruises's Ben Tre tour, which was incredible. The tour focuses on local communities untouched by large-scale commercial tourism. In addition to floating the river, we visited a coconut factory, a rice paper factory, and a brick factory.

Geothermal Valley Te Puia

This is a 70 acre complex that encompasses an old village area where the Maori of the area originally had a large settlement. The area has a lot if interesting geysers and hot springs but the Maori cultural show and other Maori exhibits ( carving school, weaving school) were the highlights.

Freetown Christiania

self-declared autonomous region of Copenhagen housing 850-1,000 residents that looks and feels like a giant hippie commune. It's fun to walk through, and there's some good food, but you won't need to spend much time here.

Skansen

Sweden's open-air history museum offers buildings from throughout Swedish history and across its various regions. Living history interpreters will tell you about the buildings, most of which you can enter. There's also a zoo featuring animals from throughout Scandinavia.

Norsk Folkemuseum

An open-air folk museum containing buildings from Norwegian history, some dating to the medieval period. Highlights include a stave church from the 1200s and farmhouses and schoolhouses with soil and grass roofs.
