We highly recommend you visit Stockholm, either as part of a tour of Scandinavia or as a stop on your way to or from Europe. The northern regions of the country have gorgeous natural beauty, hiking, skiing, dog sledding, and the northern lights.

Itineraries

Eat & Drink

Vapiano Stockholm

Vapiano is an Italian franchise with a unique payment system. Though not unique to Stockholm, Vapiano offers tasty pizzas and salads and delicious fresh pastas. The prices are also reasonable for Stockholm, and the happy hour drink prices are great.

Icebar Stockholm

Absolutely a gimmick, the Icebar is nonetheless a lot of fun. The walls, ceiling, bar, and glasses are all made out of blocks of ice chopped from a frozen river, and the room is kept at -7°C (23°F), so guests are provided with parkas and gloves upon entry.

See

Skansen

Sweden’s open-air history museum offers buildings from throughout Swedish history and across its various regions. Living history interpreters will tell you about the buildings, most of which you can enter. There’s also a zoo featuring animals from throughout Scandinavia.

Vasa Museum

A fantastic museum featuring the Vasa, a ship built in the 17th century that sank in Stockholm harbor on her maiden voyage in 1628. The ship was salvaged 333 years later and is still being renovated and restored. At the museum you’ll see the Vasa yourself, as well as exhibits about how the ship was built, how sailors on lived on similar ships in the 1600s, and other topics related to maritime history.

Drottningholm Palace

Known as “Sweden’s Versailles,” Drottningholm Palace is an enormous and stunningly beautiful palace that mixes baroque, rococo, and neoclassical styles. It was built in the seventeenth century and is still used by the royal family. We recommend the guided tour and saving time to explore the beautiful gardens.

Royal Treasury (Skattkammaren)

Located in the vaults of the Royal Palace in Stockholm, Sweden’s Royal Treasury houses the regalia, the symbols of the country’s monarchy, and the crown jewels.

ABBA Museum

Ok, we are well aware not everyone loves Abba. In fact, we were split on the need to go to this museum at all (the writer of this post, obviously in favor). However, if you do love Abba (and who doesn’t enjoy a nice rendition of Dancing Queen?!) this museum is great. Besides, who could possibly dislike a museum who’s catch phrase is “Walk in, Dance out”? A museum fully dedicated to the gods of Swedish pop, it’s full of memorabilia and is interactive as well as you walk through the sensory-overloaded exhibits.

Do

Walk Around Gamla Stan

Gamla Stan is Stockholm’s Old Town dating from the 13th century. Meander through the pedestrian only cobblestone streets, get lost in a labyrinth of alleyways, enjoy the architecture from the 1700-1800s, and take in the colorful squares.  Make sure to see Stortorget, the main square hosting the baroque Royal Palace and Royal Chapel (and if […]

Royal Canal Tour

A great 45 minute tour of some of the nicer parts of Stockholm’s waterfront (including the beautiful upscale Strandvägen), you’ll follow the Royal Canal as it twists through beautiful parkland, and the inner part of the archipelago. Prerecorded audio guides are provided to each guest so you can hear the tour in your preferred language.
