Still home of the royal family, much of the sumptuous staterooms and grounds can be visited unless the royals are in residence. This castle and town make a great day trip from London. Buy tickets for castle in advance and collect them at prepaid ticket window. Arrive before 11 in the morning to beat crowds. There are free guided tour around grounds that leave every 30 minutes – the schedule is posted at the audioguide desk (grab the included audioguide which will cover the interiors).
