Established in 1627 by Todo Takatora and dedicated to the memory of Tokugawa Ieyasu the founder of the Tokugawa Shogunate, the shrine has remained mostly intact since that time and is a classic example of Shinto architecture from the Edo Period and has been designated as an important cultural property of Japan. The building is gorgeous and dripping in gold leaf and intricate carvings. It is worth the admission price to go inside the walls.
