Yes we are suckers for great libraries and this is one of the best. An undeniably spectacular library it has the added draw of the Book of Kells – a gorgeous medieval illuminated manuscript. When continental Europe was in the midst of the Dark Ages, monks in Ireland kept learning alive in isolated monasteries, and the Book of Kells is the epitome of this. Also check out the original proclamation of the Irish Republic from the 1916 Easter Rising (all seven signers were executed). Enjoy wandering through the library.
Note: As part of ongoing conservation plans for the Old Library, the Book of Kells has been removed from public display until March 2020.
The exhibition is open 7 days a week. You can buy tickets ahead of time online or at the ticket desk within the exhibition.
