If you’re interested in history or religion, you might want to visit Svalbard Kirke, which is probably the world’s second northernmost church (St. Nicholas Church on the Russian military base claims the title for northernmost). The first church on the site was consecrated in 1921, but it was destroyed during World War II. The building that currently stands dates from 1956. Svalbard’s tourism website claims that the church is open 24 hours, but it was closed and locked when we visited in the middle of the day, so be prepared for the possibility that you might not be able to see the inside.
