Parts of the structure on this site date to the 1200s, and it served as King Eirik Magnusson’s residence until his death in 1299. The current tower was built in the 1560s by Governor Eirik Rosenkrantz as a fortress and residence. Be sure to climb the stairs to the top of the tower for great views of the city. If you’re a history buff, you might want to go on a guided tour of the tower and nearby Håkon’s Hall.
