Two years after the 5 October 1910 revolution that ousted the monarchy in Portugal, eccentric monarchist and businessman António Augusto Carvalho Monteiro built a beautiful manor near Pena Palace. The manor is well worth the walkthrough, but the real draw is the grounds, which sprawl with a tantalizing wildness. Carvallo Monteiro, a Freemason and collector, sprinkled the area with winding paths, secret tunnels, towers, and an impressive Masonic initiation well. The onsite restaurant is also quite good; it may be a convenient option for lunch during your visit to Sintra.
