Loretto Chapel

This is a cute little church in Santa Fe that is famous for its staircase. That’s right – the spiral staircase has quite a story behind it. Built in 1878, at the time there was no way to get to the choir built 22 feet above the floor. Apparently the nuns prayed to St. Joseph, the patron saint of carpeneters. On the 9th day of prayer a man appeared a the chapel with a donkey and toolbox, built this beutiful circular staircase, and disappeared. They looked for the man, and ran an ad in the newspaper, but never found him – so the legend says it was St. Joseph himself. The innovative design still perplexes experts today. It has two 360 degree turns with no visible support system. It’s actually featured in articles, TV specials, and movies surrounding unsolved mysteries.
