Kilkenny Castle is one of Ireland’s most visited sites sitting above the River Nore. Its history dates back to the 12th century. In the summer you can enjoy a guided or self-guided tour (in the winter it’s only guided tours). Make sure to see the Long Gallery’s painted roof and marble fireplace. Once you’re finished, head to the Kilkenny Castle Park which is 21 hectares extending from the castle. A Celtic-cross shaped rose garden is northwest of the castle. You can also leave the castle, head down the riverside and walk back into town at St. John’s Bridge.
