United States | Washington, D.C.
Marjorie Post, heir to the General Foods fortune, bought this stunning mansion in 1955 and soon decided it should be a museum open to the public. She filled the house with beautiful furniture and art from 18th and 19th century France and Russia. She landscaped the estate’s 25 acres with beautiful gardens and woodland paths.
Today, you can explore both the home and gardens, as well as the outlying buildings (which house rotating exhibits), and the lovely onsite café. Entry includes an excellent audio tour (via a smartphone app – iOS and Android – so bring some headphones), though docent-guided tours are offered as well.
You’ll also learn Post’s story. She was a successful businesswoman in her own right, as well as a socialite and philanthropist.
