This Unesco world heritage sight is a must see in northern Ireland. Scientists claim that the ballot hexagonal column sticking up at various heights from the sea were caused by volcanic eruptions 60 million years ago. As the lava rolled it crystallized into columns. Similar (but less impressive or extensive) formations can be found at Devil’s Postpone in California or at the black sand beach near Vik in Iceland. Of course the “real” story is more interesting and involves a giant Ulster warrior named Finn Fionn mac Cumhaill (aka MacCool) and a rival across the sea in Scotland (you’ll learn about the legend at the visitor center).
This is a truly impressive sight. There is a bus (or walk) down from the visitor center to the columns. You can explore to your hearts content as there are a variety of walks.
