This is one of the hardest national parks to get to in the country, but it’s well-worth it for its beautiful waters, fantastic sea life, and history. The archipelago is about 70 miles off the coast of the Keys. This was the site of the wreckers during Key West’s heyday. These wreckers made a living by salvaging and recovering cargo from sunken ships that washed up against the reef underneath. After taking a 2.5 hour ferry, you can enjoy snorkeling or scuba diving along the coral barrier reef (and the only tropical reef in the continental US). Late spring and early summer are the best times to explore. Check out the ferry schedule and plan accordingly. Bring your own gear, or take an organized snorkel or scuba trip.
