Coimbra’s old university is the second oldest in Europe and a UNESCO world heritage site – founded in 1290. See the grand hall and the spectacular King John library from the 18th century- built of exotic new world inlaid hardwoods with 30,000 volumes and a resident colony of bats (to keep the bugs under control). You’ll need to get a timed entry pass as soon as you get there as visitors are severely limited and visits are only for 10 minutes to keep humidity levels down.
