Catacombe di San Giovanni

The Catacombs of San Giovanni are a Christian burial site, likely used from the third through sixth centuries, and the ruins of a nearby church. The catacombs are interesting to explore, and they offer excellent examples of several different types of burial. However, we found the tour somewhat overwhelming. It’s tightly regulated (you’re not allowed to explore by yourself or take photos) and inefficient (rather than offer tours in different languages, our guide spoke separately in English and Italian, doubling the time of the tour and causing people to tune out). It’s possible to hire guide for a private tour if you prefer.
