Abbaye de Fontfroide

The Abbey was created in 1093 by a group of Benedictine monks and at one point became one of the richest Cistercian monasteries in the Christian world. Today it offers an extremely interesting historical tour of a beautifully intact abbey and is frankly impressive. Learn all about its foundation, its part in the Cathar crusade, life in the abbey and to the modern age when it was purchased by the family Fayet in the early 20th century. A fantastic tablet with audio takes you through the many rooms, incredibly large cathedral, and winds you through some spectacular gardens. The Abbey also offers wine tasting (they produce both wine and beer) and a good restaurant. You get a discount with the Carcassonne city pass that’s given to you as part of the TI Carcassonne tour.
