The Jacobite Train

The Jacobite Train (better known as the Hogwarts Express) is a 2 hour train ride that runs between Fort William and the town of Mallaig. It’s known as one of the great railway journeys of the world and it speeds through rolling hills, past lochs, and across the historic 21 arched Glenfinnan Viaduct (made famous in the Harry Potter films – don’t forget to look up for flying cars). You’ll streak along from Britain’s highest mountain Ben Nevis to the fishing port of Mallaig where you can have a very enjoyable lunch with a view of Scotland’s small isles and Skye on a clear day, or catch a ferry to one of the small islands or Skye.

The trains leave from Fort William in the morning and return from Mallaig in the afternoon. There is a short stop to stretch your legs at the Glenfinnan station and it includes 1.5 hours in Mallaig. Once you get to Mallaig, grab lunch at The Fishmarket and then walk around and enjoy the shops and bars. The outside patio of the Tea Garden is another great option if you have extra time for tea or a beer.

For an extra treat, book a seat in the First Class Carriage, the “HP” Compartment Carriage (this compartment only, not all first class tickets are this so make sure you’re booking correctly, also only available on morning service) and really ride in style. These seats book up far in advance and are pricier, but a much nicer way to ride.
