The Residenz, set on Max-Joseph-Platz, is the winter palace of the Wittelsbach royal family and is full of gilded elegance. It’s Munich’s best interior palace to tour (Nymphenburg has the best exterior and gardens) and has a museum where you can see beautiful staterooms, an impressive treasury, and a Cuvillies Theatre. The facade is modeled after the Medici’s Pitti Palace in Florence and was largely rebuilt after WWII. Make sure to see the Halls of the Nibelungen, the inspiration of Wagner’s Der Ring des Nibelungen. Then make your way to the Residenzmuzeum which is really just the best parts of the Reidenz itself including its spectacular banquet and reception halls. Finally end with the Residenz Treasury which has a thousand years of the royal Wittelsbach’s jewelry gems. If you add on the Cuvillies theatre, it’s in a wing of the Residenz and offers you a visit to a single theatre hall that was heavily restored in the Rococo style – Mozart conducted here.
