There are a multitude of northern lights tours from Tromso (that’s why people come here). We chose this one because it was highly rated in reviews and it was small (7 max). They did not disappoint – this is a GREAT tour. The bus is specially equipped with everything – including hot soup, muffins, mini fire, photography support. Well, everything except a bathroom (there’s one of those on the way back but you’ll be out for a while – be sure to watch fluid consumption and hit the restroom before you go…
You leave in the early evening – expect to be out 6-9 hours.
We stopped at a couple of places – and ended up on a frozen lake only a few km from Finland where we had a great northern lights viewing. One thing to be aware of – the light actually look better in photos – they are more more vibrant green with long exposures than with the naked eye so good photography is super helpful.
It’s also super cold – dress warm. They have exposure suits (you’ll likely want to sue them) but be sure and bring a good hat and gloves.
