Hawaiʻi | Hawaii | United States
Hawaii is perhaps the best place in the world to see manta rays because the rays have learned that bright lights shining on the ocean in a couple of spots near the city of Kona are excellent places to feed on plankton (the plankton in turn are attracted by the lights). You’ll cruise to one of two locations (either in Keauhou Bay or further north near the airport) and hang onto a lighted float while the rays swim and swirl around you. It is truly a magical experience.
Several companies offer tours to see the mantas, and we highly recommend Fair Wind Cruises. They offer top-notch guides, a comfortable boat, a strong environmental commitment, and a great lighting system that will encourage the rays to spend more time with you. The experience is truly remarkable, and you shouldn’t miss it during your time on the Big Island.
