Hawaii | Maui | United States
Lahaina is Hawaii’s historic former capital and was the hub of whaling and missionary activity. It’s a great town to wander around on foot with real charm. Front street faces the ocean with a lot of restaurants right on the water. The middle of town has an enormous Banyan tree planted to provide shade for the hot days. Stop in the visitor center in the old courthouse and pick up the historic walking tour guide. There are a couple of historic houses you can tour as well. The harbor (where you may be taking a cruise) is right downtown near the banyan tree.
Parking can be challenging and expensive. There is a free lot for three hours if you get there early at 750 Luakini St or at 116 Prison St. The biggest parking lot in Lahaina is a paid lot (and connected parking structure) on the north side of Papalaua street, about a half block inland from Front Street -entry off Waine’e St and part of the Lahaina center outlets.
