Fort Zachary Taylor Historic State Park and Beach

Fort Taylor was built for defense during the American Civil War and the national historic monument remains, but so does the lovely beach it is set upon. If you love history, start by visiting the monument which houses the largest collection of Civil War military equipment in the world and learn about the fort’s role in the Civil and Spanish-American Wars. Then make your way to the highlight: the beach. This is one of Key West’s prettiest beaches. The water is set along a somewhat rocky beach but has some of the best snorkeling in the Keys. Look out for a barracuda. There’s plenty of shade, picnic tables, restroom facilities, and a cafe. Bring water shoes for the rocks. There’s a small fee to enter the park/beach.
