This is pretty much the quintessential activity near Sarlat France and the one you’ll see your friends post and instantly be jealous of their pictures. Feel like you’re in Michael Crichton’s Timeline on this 9 mile paddle of the Lot River Valley as you float by impressive castles that once withstood the 100 Years’ War. You’ll pass the towns of La Roque-Gageac, Castlenaud, Chateau de Fayrac (just a castle), and Beynac, after which there will be a well-marked area to pull out of the river. Allow 2-3 hours for a decent paced trip, and for extra enjoyment a bit more time to enjoy lunch at a cafe in La Roque-Gageac. While you can climb to both Castelnaud and Beynac castles from where you dock your canoe, we actually recommend driving back and exploring the castles later in the afternoon. Why? You’ll be pretty wet and it is quite a hike to both of the castles from the river. Rent your canoes from Perigord-Aventure et Loisirs, they were a great option. Drive from the main round-about in Vitrac, cross the river and turn right – look for bright yellow canoes.
