We’re wrapping up 2022 by thinking back to some of the best places we’ve ever stayed. Without further ado, here’s a list, in no particular order, of our favorite hotels in the world.
Pacuare Lodge, Pacuare, Costa Rica
Costa Rica’s Pacuare Lodge is an experience like no other. Nestled in the remote jungle on the banks of the the rough Pacuare River, the lodge is typically reached by whitewater raft (highly recommended) or helicopter. Guests stay in private bungalows among the trees and are lulled to sleep by the sounds of the rainforest.
During your stay, you can enjoy a number of exciting activities including ziplining, canyoneering, nature hikes, and whitewater rafting (of course). There’s also a spa on site. The hotel provides excellent food, and the staff is incredibly friendly and helpful. Staying here should be on your travel bucket list.
Tonglen Lake Lodge, Denali, Alaska
The staff here described Tonglen Lake Lodge as a “little slice of heaven,” and we can’t disagree. Located at the gates of Denali National Park, the lodge sits on the edge of a lake with stunning views of the nearby mountains. The hotel offers nature hikes, bonfires, and other activities to keep you occupied when you’re not exploring Denali. Nearby 229 Parks Restaurant and Tavern also offers the best food in the region.
JW Marriott Phuket, Phuket, Thailand
This beach resort is located in a protected area and is the only hotel along Phuket’s glorious Mi Khao beach. An all-inclusive experience, the hotel has several onsite restaurants and bars, as well as numerous swimming pools. It’s a great option for families, while those traveling without children will appreciate the adults-only pool with a swim-up bar. It’s also not uncommon to find good deals here (in both cash and Marriot Bonvoy redemptions) during the offseason. The only downside of this incredible hotel is that it’s about a 45-minute drive from Phuket town. So plan for this when you book excursions: most activities (like SCUBA diving or speedboat tours) leave from town, which will require extra time (and often an additional fee).
Abigail’s Inn, Camden, Maine
This cozy bed-and-breakfast, an historic home in the charming coastal town of Camden, is the perfect place to stay during your trip to Maine. Dave, the innkeeper, goes out of his way to be friendly and helpful. The breakfast is excellent, and the rooms are well-appointed and very comfortable.
Langahlid Cottages, Seyðisfjörður, Iceland
Most visitors to Iceland don’t make it to the to the town of Seyðisfjörður on the island’s east coast; it’s about as far from Reykjavik as you can get. But you definitely should go there; it’s set on a stunningly beautiful fjord, and the Langahild Cottages are the perfect place to stay. Perched on the hillside above the fjords, they’re in a private location a short ways out of town, with access to hiking trails. The cottages also have big decks with amazing views, complete with hot tubs that are the best way to enjoy a midnight sunset over the fjord.
Quinta de Ventozelo, Douro, Portugal
Portugal’s Douro Valley is the country’s premier wine region. It’s also gorgeous. There are plenty of great options to stay here; many of the beautiful old wine estates (“quintas”) offer lodging. But Quinta de Ventozelo stands out. On a hill overlooking the valley, it has an incredible view. The staff is warm and welcoming, and the food and wine are great (be sure to arrange a tasting).
Hotel Luc, Berlin, Germany
With a great location in central Berlin, this comfortable hotel is walkable to many of Berlin’s attractions (including its incredible collection of museums). The staff is top-notch, and the restaurant is good. The décor is great as well; most of the art and design is inspired by Frederick the Great.
Enchantment Resort, Sedona, Arizona
It’s absolutely a splurge, but the Enchantment Resort in Sedona is aptly named. Nestled in a canyon in one of the most beautiful parts of red rock country in the southwestern United States, Enchantment is absolutely gorgeous. There’s plenty to entertain you on site (including the world-class spa), but the surrounding country also offers excellent opportunities for hiking and exploring.
Relais Santa Anastasia, Castelbuono, Italy
You need to spend some time in Cefalù on your trip to Sicily, and Relais Santa Anastasia is where you should stay. It’s a bit of a trek from town, but it’s worth it. A winery and hotel, Relais Santa Anastasia has comfortable rooms, tasty food, and (of course) great wine. The trails around the winery also offer breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside.
Colca Lodge Spa & Hot Springs, Colca Valley, Peru
Peru’s gorgeous Colca Valley is home to the outstanding Colca Lodge Spa & Hot Springs. The lodge has an excellent restaurant and comfortable rooms, but the main attraction is the is the hot springs. With several pools of varying temperatures, you can relax in the hot water while soaking in amazing views of the canyon, or the stars overhead if you venture out at night.
Cabins on the Point, Orcas Island, Washington
Orcas Island is an incredible place to visit, and the Cabins on the Point are the perfect place stay. They’re close enough to town, but on a secluded and private point overlooking Massacre Bay. It’s a spectacularly beautiful spot, and the cozy cabins will make you feel at home. Have a bonfire on the beach, explore the bay on one of the included kayaks, or relax in the hot tub when you’re not visiting the island’s other attractions.
